Remembering Our Dead: February 2017
Every year on or around 20th November people worldwide gather for the Transgender day of Remembrance to to remember the trans people we have lost to murder and violence in the past year, as reported by the Trans Murder Monitoring Project and published by Transgender Europe (TGEU).
The following are details of trans people known to have been killed worldwide during February 2017 (see TDoR 2017: Say their names. Learn their stories. Remember them for an index covering the whole year).

The victim was found by passersby floating in the Rio Capibaribe near the near the Paulo Guerra Bridge in Recife.
Her body showed marks of violence and her legs had been tied together. Police reported that she appeared to be about 40 years old.

Ágatha was strangled and clubbed on the head after using the girls bathroom at college and her body dumped in the street. A message left in the bathroom read “Male in a skirt, no!”.

Angelo was a professional stylist. She was in her salon when she was shot in the back with a shotgun by a 21 year old man who then fled the premises before being caught by the police.

Alexandra died after being shot in the skull and right leg. The crime could be related to that of a recently killed gay man as both victims had their penis and face cut off.
Her loved ones explained that she was a very active person. In addition to working in styling, was dedicated to organizing birthday parties and any other type of celebrations. She stood out dancing in a group of “garotas”, so “everyone was looking for it”.
At 32 years of age she had been the winner of the Miss Gay Venezuela contest, in which she participated in the years 2009 and 2010.
“She led the floats of Henri Falcón during the carnival, she was the first to leave with her wings (…) She was the queen of the Why Not nightclub.”

Nampuang was a sex worker. Her body was found inside a house which was undergoing construction work. She had bruises around her neck, and a stab wound to the breast.
A witness reported a teenager wearing a motorcycle helmet parked in front of the house after the incident.

Dandara was publicly tortured and beaten to death by several young men. Her horrific ordeal was recorded and published on YouTube. The video was later removed, but not before news of her horrific ordeal had spread worldwide.

When she got on the bike that would take her to the place where the video of her beating was filmed, Dandara dos Santos said goodbye and smiled to those around her. It was February 15 last. On that street in Conjunto Ceará, she grew up, made friends, distributed favors, took care of her mother, danced … Dandara was sweet and cheerful. Even those who did not know her well knew the reputation of being polite and playful.
“The day she died, I saw her at the supermarket buying bread. She went every morning, helping a gentleman down there” pointed out a neighbor, who did not want to be identified. The routine on the pavement street was to drink coffee and smoke cigarettes. Inside the house, her corner was a hammock in front of the bad-looking television.

Morgana was shot dead in the street in Vila Galvão, Caçapava while with a friend. According to her friend’s testimony, the driver of a car called to her and shot her in the head. She died at the scene.

Yasuri Orellana and Daniela Rodríguez were on their way to a party in the center of San Luis Talpa on 18th February 2017 when they were rammed by a car. Without saying a word the driver pulled out a firearm and shot them several times.
On 15th June 2018 their alleged murderer Dimas Antonio Ramos Aparicio was deported from the USA to El Salvador to face trial for aggravated homicide.
A comment posted on the above news report reads:
“The headline of the news is bad and is tendentious. It’s not about two men dressed as women. They are trans people, they should not even be called trans-homosexuals. As journalists, I do not think they are unaware of LGBT concepts.”
Daniela was identified as D. Rodriguez in the TGEU TDoR 2017 memorial list.

One lady said she was thrilled when she saw Madonna crying inhappiness over a plate of food she won at Christmas when a religious group gave a dinner party at the fair for street people. She said that Maradona was not a bad person and liked to talk to everyone with great affection.
